No.4 Quality Row and Duplex 2 & 3

No.4 was the Civil Commandant’s Chief Clerk’s quarters and was fired in 1908. Today all that remains are ruins.

No,2 and No.3 fondly know as the 'The Duplex' can be viewed inside anytime, day or night ( if you dare ! )

So is ‘The Duplex’ Australia’s most haunted house?

"It is an unassuming looking building standing up on a hill in Quality Row. No. 2-3 is known far and wide as ‘The Duplex’ and it is also known as Australia’s most haunted house.

Dating back to at least 1842 the building once served as the residence for the Superintendent of Convicts. In 1856 the Christian and McCoy families who had moved to Norfolk from Pitcairn took up occupancy of The Duplex. For the McCoy family it was occupied by Margaret McCoy, a widow and her 13 children.

According to folklore the innocent looking building holds many unexplained happenings and these events have been reported by locals and tourists alike.

Being something of a sceptic myself I entered the duplex in daylight hours and made my way through the first dwelling. As I was standing in the hallway of No.3 I was looking in at the fireplace when I felt a sudden presence of someone standing behind me. It was an eerie feeling but yet it was non-threatening.

Today The Duplex is popular with Norfolk Island Ghost Tours, and the ghostly apparitions are not restricted to The Duplex. For those interested in seeking the paranormal I recommend the undertaking of a Norfolk Island Ghost Tour.

( Slightly ) Across the road from The Duplex is the Norfolk Island Cemetery.

It is recorded that once when Ray Martin was visiting the Island doing a documentary his combat hardened and very worldly cameraman refused totally to enter the cemetery after dark.

The same is also said of The Duplex which has the reputation of Being Australia’s most haunted house." Ian Ramsay
